Like so many others, when HEX: Shards of Fate was first announced on Kickstarter, I watched it closely. It’s no exaggeration to say that I refreshed that page several dozen times a day, every day, watching its pledge total rising almost in real time. The concept of an MMO-TCG seemed like something that was so completely logical, that I wondered why no one else had ever considered creating one.
Certainly, there are massive pitfalls with anything MMO-related, however in this case, it wouldn’t feel so much like an MMO than an insanely deep TCG experience to be shared with friends. Again, a completely logical concept that makes one wonder why it had never been tackled before.
Perhaps it’s because of the investment required to make it truly feature-rich; which leads us to Kickstarter. Cryptozoic had already done a lot of work on the game client, and were looking for a measly $300,000 to complete it. What they walked away with was over 2.5 million between Kickstarter and their own site’s PayPal backer system.
